Coffee Stain Emergency: 5-Minute Fix

calendar_todayFebruary 28, 2026timer3 min read

A knocked-over morning coffee doesn't have to ruin your carpet — but the first five minutes matter more than anything you do later. Coffee contains tannins, natural dyes that bind to carpet fibres as they dry, so speed is everything.

Minute 1 — Blot, don't rub. Grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and press down to soak up as much liquid as possible. Work from the outside of the spill inward so you don't spread it. Never scrub — rubbing pushes coffee deeper and frays the pile.

Minute 2 — Cold water, never hot. Lightly pour or mist cold water over the area and blot again. Heat sets tannin stains permanently, so keep everything cold. Repeat the blot-and-dilute a couple of times.

Minute 3-4 — Mild acidic solution. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar into a cup of cold water and blot it gently onto the stain with a fresh cloth. The mild acidity helps release the tannin bond. For a safe, fibre-friendly option, our pH-balanced Number One spray is formulated for exactly this.

Minute 5 — Dry and check. Blot the area dry and lay a clean dry towel over it with a light weight to draw out the last of the moisture. Most fresh coffee spills lift completely with this method.

If the stain has already dried, involves a milky or sugary coffee, or sits on a delicate wool carpet, call in the professionals before you risk setting it. True Revive Xpert removes dried and stubborn coffee stains across Queenstown and Central Otago.
