A splashed glass of Pinot Noir on a pristine light carpet or an expensive sofa is a nightmare scenario. Red wine contains anthocyanins, which act as a powerful natural dye, especially on porous surfaces like wool carpets or upholstery fabric.
The Golden Rule: You have exactly 5 minutes before the dye begins to set permanently. Never rub the stain. Rubbing pushes the wine deeper into the padding and permanently distorts the twist of the carpet fibers.
Step 1: The Blot. Grab a clean, white, dry cloth or a stack of paper towels. Press firmly straight down onto the spill to absorb as much liquid as possible. Continue rotating to a dry part of the cloth until no more red transfers.
Step 2: The Salt Trick. Once you have blotted the excess, pour a generous mound of table salt directly over the damp spot. The salt acts as a desiccant, physically pulling the remaining moisture and wine pigment out of the fibers. Leave it overnight, then vacuum.
